FIRST PRIZE BERNARD DE POOTER AWARD 1997
Awakening
130 x 200 cm
1997
Acryl and oil on canvas

This powerful series was born during a time when Richard was professionally engaged with traffic and road safety.
The Motorcycle Cyclus reflects both the thrill of the ride and the ever-lurking shadow of danger. It reminds us how quickly joy can turn to vulnerability—how, in a single moment, everything can change.
In The Onlookers, a fallen motorcyclist lies surrounded by bystanders. Next to it hangs Awakening, a haunting perspective from the rider himself, just regaining consciousness and staring into the faces that gather around him.
Together, these works are striking meditations on fragility, confusion, and the deeply human instinct to watch—sometimes without acting.
With Awakening, Richard was awarded the Bernard de Pooter Prize.
